The influence Sawyer has had on our community as a whole and on each of us individually has been enormous. He has been a driving force for the community we all value and appreciate, and has worked tirelessly in the background to provide wonderful experiences for everybody. He has been a friend, mentor, jokester, and leader to all of us.

Sawyer spent endless volunteer hours ensuring the teaching and working environment at the club was nothing less than amazing for the people around him. Not only did he spearhead this atmosphere at the club itself, but focused on also building the community outside of work. He organized trips, events, and special occasions with the clear intention to make everybody feel welcome and at home. On top of that he was an excellent teacher and a kind, thoughtful mentor to his fellow instructors.

He gave a lot to our club, and we will continue to feel his impact for years to come. In the hopes of showing some tangible form of appreciation, we have created the Sawyer “Morale” Plato Community Spirit Award.

The award is given to a member of the Hollyburn Sailing Club Training Program who has gone above and beyond to make HSC an excellent place to work, play, and belong. Individuals who receive this award show compassion, patience, and a depth of commitment to the community.

Recipients are chosen on three main qualities that Sawyer exhibited and encouraged during his time at Hollyburn. Recipients must have shown that they have:

  1. Created events and opportunities for community building;

  2. Put others before themselves;

  3. Shown excellence in teaching and mentoring roles.

This annual award will be presented at the end of each summer season.

Congratulations to Braxton Reimer for receiving the 2020 award!
