Did you know it’s… Safe Boating Awareness Week!
May 16th to May 22nd
What is Safe Boating Awareness Week:
Safe Boating Awareness Week takes place during the third week in May, signifying the start of the boating season. As boaters prepare to head out on the water we want to share some key reminders that will help to keep them safe throughout the entire season. Remember: Boating safety is important throughout the year!
Key Messages of the Day:
- Take a Safe
Boating Course- Get your Pleasure Craft Operator Competency Card (PCOC)
- If you operate a boat with a motor you must carry proof of competency — something that shows you have a basic understanding of how to operate your boat safely and know what to do in an emergency.
- Proof of competency is required with all motor types (including electric trolling motors) and even when the motor is not in use (such as when sailing).
- You can your PCOC card by passing an accredited boating safety course.
- Boat Sober – It’s the law!
- It is illegal to operate a boat while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Drugs and alcohol affect your ability to react and increase the risk of a crash. Stay alert while operating your boat.
- Staying sober is your responsibility – you are responsible for the safety of your guests and others waterway users.
- Prepare before you sail
- Complete a pre-departure check list to make sure your Pleasure Craft is in good working order and properly equipped before heading out on the water.
- Leave a trip/rescue plan with a responsible person. It will let them know where you are going and how long you will be travelling for.
- Check the forecast for unsafe weather and water conditions before heading out and keep a watchful eye out for changes to these conditions
